The windows in a ZED home are particularly efficient at reducing the amount of heat lost to the outside. Not only does this help to reduce heating bills but also allows people to comfortably use the area next to the window even in the coldest weather.
The windows on southern aspects of a ZEDHomes development are double-glazed and argon filled. Each pane has a low emission coating and a mid pane U-value of 1 (with an overall frame value of 1.2). The double-skinned design of the conservatory allows maximum passive solar gain, with opening windows for comfort control during the summer months. The windows on the north, east, and west sides of the building are triple glazed and krypton filled, with two low-emission coatings and a mid pane U-value of 0.6. All windows are timber framed. In terms of the environmental impact of material sourcing for construction materials, the use of timber rather than uPVC or aluminium frames has so far provided the largest environmental saving. This fact has been independently assessed by BRE (Buildings Research Establishment). |
