Responses to ZEDHomes' vision for Ashford

The positives

As Chairman of CPRE Ashford, I was much encouraged by the Zed Homes public exhibition on September 22nd. As you know, CPRE welcome all that you mention in your letter to me dated 12th September 2005.

I would be grateful if you would keep me up to date with any further information about this development.

Yours sincerely

Charles Oliver chairman Ashford ctee CPRE

"I like the idea of car sharing and car pools"

"Brilliant concept, excellent design"

"making good use of otherwise wasted land"

"very far sighted"

"being a brown field site, away from old Ashford, I think the buildings will not stand out or clash with existing area"

"an interesting and enviable idea for Ashford"

"It is important that we consider forward thinking and environmentally sustainable options for housing"

"We should not discount any proposals that give us an opportunity to become more sustainable and assist the country to reduce energy use"

"Density of a sustainable community should be paramount in the councils considerations. ABC should grasp this opportunity to be forward thinking and embrace innovation such as this for the future of our town and families"

"I hope the scheme proceeds. Ashford needs such a progressive incentive - indeed more of them!"

"Ashford councillors need to think more broadly about this kind of development"

"At last a proposal to develop the waste ground between the town centre and Victoria park, that is environmentally good, exciting and welcome"

"looks elegant and green"

"The scheme would bring a much improved and needed environment to Ashford"

"Great - Ashford needs it!"

"Can you please start immediately. I want to be one of the first to buy a flat"

"Bring it on! Ashford certainly needs something to give a modern perspective"

"The wider problems of transport around the town remain an issue but please don't be deterred by other people's lack of vision"

"I hope ABC have learned the lessons of Stanhope"

"The council will never be forgiven for Charter House"

"The buildings are not high enough for a brownfield site - you should go higher"

"refreshing change from semi-detached boxes"

"Glad ZED is coming to Ashford"

The negatives

"The high rise building overlooking the school playground is inappropriate"

"No schools included which means the council will need to rebuild or build more nearby!"

"20 storey blocks may be too high. With so many blocks, we may become like London"

"concerned at lack of ramped access from footbridge for cyclists / pushchairs"

"get rid of the gasworks"

"people will hate the height possibly due to Charter House, thinking it is still a 50's market town!"

"The tower seems very tall. I hope it stands our as an icon rather than an eyesore"

"concerned that flats would be bought by those only interested in the investment opportunity, and/or live here part-time"

"concerned about the issue of maintenance, re-using service charge to the people living in the properties. This must be kept at reasonable levels and is a particular issue for those occupying affordable homes"

"High rise buildings do not work. We are knocking down Stanhope!"

"All very ingenious but is it achievable?"

"be realistic. Do people really want to live in high rise flats? I don't think so"
